Why "Looking for an Internship" is the Worst Way to Find One (And What to Do Instead)
A Tech Hiring Manager’s guide to ditching the passive “consumer” mindset and building a portfolio that actually lands engineering roles.

If you spend any time in online career groups, you will see hundreds of variations of the exact same post: “Looking for a summer internship in [Location] for my student.” Here is the hard truth from a Tech Hiring Manager: This passive approach does not work. It rarely leads to legitimate opportunities and almost exclusively attracts bots, spammers, and pay-to-play programs.
In today’s highly competitive market, companies do not hire students simply because they want to learn. They hire students because they have demonstrated the ability to build. To actually secure a role, students must transition from a passive “Consumer” mentality (asking for an opportunity) to an active “Builder” mentality (demonstrating immediate value).
Recently, I evaluated several common internship requests. Because so many students make the same strategic errors, I have anonymized these real-world scenarios and broken down exactly how to pivot each one into a winning, “Builder-focused” strategy.
Scenario 1: The College Software Engineer (Targeting Big Tech & Defense)
The Situation: A college junior seeking an AI or Software Engineering role in Arizona.
The Flaw: Dropping a generic request into a void and waiting for connections.
The Builder Strategy: The Alumni Leverage As a junior, this student is in the prime recruiting window. For regions like Arizona, massive tech hubs (like Intel in Chandler) and defense giants (like Raytheon or General Dynamics) hire armies of interns. However, blind online applications are a black hole.
The Execution: Go to LinkedIn and search: ‘Software Engineer’ + ‘[Your University]’ + ‘[Target Company]’. Find an alumni working there and message them: “Hi, fellow [Mascot] here. I’m a Junior looking at the summer internship queue...”
The Why: An alumni referral is worth 100 blind applications. Builders don’t wait for recruiters to find them; they orchestrate their own warm introductions.
Scenario 2: The Robotics Student (Navigating Liability)
The Situation: A parent looking for a robotics internship for their sophomore student in the Bay Area.
The Flaw: Not distinguishing between the High School and College playing fields. The Builder Strategy: Startups vs. Digital Portfolios The strategy here entirely depends on the student’s age.
If High School: Finding official hardware internships is incredibly tough due to liability and insurance rules (most labs cannot let a minor on the manufacturing floor). They need to build a Digital Portfolio of home projects. Companies won’t hire high schoolers to “teach” them; they hire them because they have already built tangible things in their garage. Leverage local FRC/FTC robotics mentor networks instead of corporate job boards.
If College: Ignore the massive corporate job boards. Look at Series A/B robotics startups in the area (e.g., San Jose/Fremont). These startups are often desperate for hands-on help and care far more about applied skills (CAD, wiring, ROS) than GPA.
Scenario 3: The High School Business Student (The Entrepreneurial Pivot)
The Situation: A high school junior seeking a formal business internship.
The Flaw: Expecting a corporation to hand sensitive financial or strategic data to a minor.
The Builder Strategy: The “Cold Pitch” Formal business internships for high schoolers essentially do not exist. But from an MBA perspective, this is a massive opportunity. Top business schools value initiative far more than a generic “office assistant” title.
The Execution: Have the student act like a consultant. Identify 3–5 local small businesses (boutiques, realtors, CPAs). Pitch a solution: “I’m a business student building my portfolio. I noticed your social media/website/Excel tracking could use an update. Can I fix that for you for a low cost, or even for free?”
The Why: If they land even one client, they haven’t just “had an internship”—they have started a business. That is the ultimate Builder move and a gold star on a college application.
Scenario 4: The Electrical Engineering Student (Selling the “Toolbelt”)
The Situation: A junior EE student posting that they have their “internship resume ready.”
The Flaw: Electrical Engineering is a massive field. Just saying “I am an EE major” tells a hiring manager absolutely nothing about your utility.
The Builder Strategy: Define Your Utility To avoid spam and attract real engineering leads, you must be hyper-specific about what you can execute. Always include:
Hard Skills: Do you have experience with Python, PCB Design (KiCad/Altium), or Soldering?
Specific Interest: Are you focused on Embedded Systems, Power, or RF?
The ‘Solution’: What can you build for a company today? (e.g., pitch “I can prototype circuit boards” instead of “I want to learn about circuit boards”).
Scenario 5: The CS Student (Avoiding the “Pay-to-Play” Trap)
The Situation: A sophomore looking for remote or local CS work.
The Flaw: Falling prey to expensive, generic “summer programs.”
The Builder Strategy: Unpaid Project Work > Paid Camps Parents frequently ask about remote “AI Programs” that cost $3,000+. Be warned: as a Tech Hiring Manager, these do not look like internships on a resume; they look like adult daycare.
The Execution: If the student has real coding skills (a GitHub link, a Python project, Java/C++ experience), they are infinitely better off cold-emailing local software firms in their nearest tech center offering “unpaid project work.” A real, messy project for a local mid-sized tech firm builds ten times more credibility than a sanitized, pay-to-play remote camp.
The Bottom Line: Stop asking the internet for a job. Start showing the market what you can build, who you can help, and what problems you can solve.
