Your kid just got their college email. Within 24 hours, they’ll discover Amazon Prime has a student discount. By day three, they’ll stumble onto Target’s 20% off deal. By week two, the Facebook parent groups will be flooded with tips about Hulu, Spotify, and DoorDash.
But here’s what nobody tells you: the real wealth hidden in that .edu email isn’t in entertainment streaming or fast food discounts. It’s locked behind something called the GitHub Student Pack, a bundle of developer tools, cloud infrastructure, and software licenses that cost $3,000–$5,000 per year if you buy them full price.

This isn’t cynicism. It’s alignment. Your kid learns on the tools that will dominate their career. The company builds brand loyalty from day one. Everyone wins.
The question is: does your family actually access it?
Most don’t. And that’s not because the information isn’t available. It’s because college parents are looking in the wrong places. You’re scanning Facebook parent groups for Hulu tips when you should be reading the GitHub Student Pack documentation.

Not all college discounts are equal. I divide them into three categories and only one of them actually matters for a future builder.

Tier 2: Productivity Subscriptions. Microsoft 365, Adobe Creative Cloud discounts, Canva Pro. These have some legitimate value if your student uses them for coursework, particularly creative majors. Maybe $200–$500 annual value.
Tier 3: The Builder’s Stack. This is where the real Financial Source Code lives.

The best part: it doesn’t expire the moment they graduate. GitHub Student Pack eligibility extends one to three years after graduation, depending on the institution.
Compare this to the family that’s carefully managing the $8 Spotify student discount while their developer kid is buying $25/month JetBrains licenses out of pocket because they didn’t know the pack existed.
JetBrains: The $200 Question Your Kid Isn’t Asking
JetBrains IDEs are the professional standard for software development across Java, Python, JavaScript, C++, Kotlin, and Go. A typical developer buys 2–3 different IDEs from the JetBrains suite depending on their language specialization. Each costs $150–$250 per year.
Through the GitHub Student Pack (or directly through JetBrains), students get the entire suite free. All of it. Every IDE, every plugin, every feature. For free. While enrolled, and for one year after graduation.
The moment they graduate and don’t have the student pack anymore? That’s $200–$400/year out of their entry-level developer salary.
But here’s the reframe: JetBrains knows this. They price it knowing the muscle memory created in school translates to professional purchases later. Your kid gets free tools while learning. The company gets a future customer. The economics are clean.
The question for parents: does your student know about this? Do they even know what JetBrains is? Because if they’re “coding” in free online IDEs or generic text editors, they’re not learning on professional tools. They’re leaving a Critical Root Zone of technical skill undefended.

The Builder’s Stack Isn’t Just About Money. It’s About Artifacts.
Here’s the deeper layer that most parents miss when they frame this as a financial decision: the tools themselves are what enable artifact creation. And artifacts are the signal.

Look, your kid should get the Spotify discount if they can’t get anything done without listening to music. Amazon Prime Student is legit, 6 months free, then 50% off. The Target 20% off is real money if they’re buying textbooks or dorm supplies.
But this is the mistake: when parents ask in Facebook groups “what free stuff should my student sign up for,” everyone responds with the lifestyle stuff first because it’s easy to explain and universally applicable. You’re reading a thread about Netflix discounts when you should be bookmarking the GitHub Student Pack documentation.
The reframe is this. Tier 1 discounts save money on things your kid was going to buy anyway. Tier 3 tools unlock new capabilities your kid couldn’t afford otherwise. If your student wants to learn machine learning, build a portfolio project, or launch a startup idea, those credits and JetBrains licenses aren’t nice-to-haves. What Actually Gets Activated (And Why)
In college parent groups, you see lists like this:

Why the gap? Because the lifestyle stuff gets recommended by peers, parents, and influencers. The developer tools get buried in documentation that assumes you already know what you’re looking for.
Your kid doesn’t wake up freshman year thinking “I wonder if I should activate my GitHub Student Pack.” They wake up thinking “everyone’s talking about Spotify Student, let me get that.”
This is a distribution problem, not an information problem. The information exists. It’s just not flowing through the parent networks where most families look first.

Both students have a college email. Only one is using its actual architecture.
The Choice Architecture Question
Here’s what I want you to consider: if your student is considering a CS major, an engineering path, data science, or any technical field, activating the GitHub Student Pack on their first day is Choice Architecture 101. It should be as automatic as setting up your college email.
Not because they’ll immediately use everything in it. But because it removes friction from the moment they want to learn something that requires professional tools. When a friend suggests building a project together, or they want to learn a new programming language, or they decide to apply for an internship and need a real portfolio, the tools are already there, paid for, waiting.
The alternative is the student who has the capability and interest, but decides “JetBrains is too expensive, I’ll just use the free editor instead.” They’re learning on a worse tool, and their projects suffer.

Here’s the logistics: GitHub Student Pack eligibility requires a valid .edu email and proof of enrollment. Activation takes 10 minutes. The pack is valid through graduation plus one year after. For many students, that’s a four-year benefit window from a ten-minute registration.
Compare this to every Tier 1 discount that requires re-activation or renewal each year.
Most college parents ask their kids about streaming discounts the moment the college email arrives. Make this your follow-up question: “Have you activated your GitHub Student Pack yet?” If the answer is “what’s that,” you’ve just identified a $2,000 gap.
What You Actually Tell Your Kid
You don’t send them a 2,000-word article. You send them this:

If they’re in CS, engineering, data science, or any technical field, this conversation is ROI-positive. If they’re in business, communications, or other non-tech majors, it’s less critical, but still worth a ten-minute setup.
What Happens After Graduation
Here’s where the narrative gets even more exciting, and here’s where I’m going to pause.
Because the real financial architecture of the student tool ecosystem isn’t about what’s free during college. It’s about what becomes expensive after. And understanding that gap, the difference between what your kid has access to now and what they’ll have to pay for in their first job, is where the real ROI diagnostic happens.
